However, there were 6 other teams who fought for the title and fell short at various stages and every team had some top class talent which failed to take their the distance. Even then, they managed to provide some superb entertainment over the 60 games and helped make the IPL campaign a successful one.

Now that the tournament is over, let’s take a look at how each team performed as we try to rate the franchises:

  1. Kings XI Punjab:

P: 14; W: 4; L: 10

The Punjab outfit has not been a consistent team in the leagues since the first edition. They reached the final of the competition a couple of years ago but have never been a team that scares the opponents.

They started the season with South Africa’s David Miller as the skipper but had to appoint Murali Vijay in his place after a string of poor performances from the team. However, the changes in the squad along with injuries to a couple of key players disrupted their flow in the middle of the tournament and 3 back to back losses in the last three games of the group stage saw them glued to the bottom of the table.

Rising Pune Supergiants:

P: 14; W: 5; L: 9

After the termination of CSK and RR, the Rising Pune Supergiants was one of the two franchises that were making their debut in the competition.

The owners managed to gather a sensational squad with the likes of MS Dhoni, Faf du Plessis, Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh all making some good progress at the start of the season. But injuries to many a foreign players early in the tournament saw them lose their way in the competition as they managed to win just 5 games. They were unlucky at times losing a number of close games which saw them finish the competition in the 7th place in the points table.

Delhi

  1. Delhi Daredevils:

P: 14; W: 7; L: 7

The Daredevils went through a lot of changes at the start of the campaign with the likes of Rahul Dravid appointed as the mentor for the side while Zaheer Khan was asked to captain the side even before the start of the tournament.

And it looked like the changes did work as DD looked like they would cruise into the qualifying stage half-way through the tournament. But a dip in form in the later stages of the tournament saw the side slowly slip out leaving them in search of a victory in the last group stage game against RCB. They eventually lost the game and were knocked out but it was a season to remember for the fans who were given enough entertainment throughout the competition.

  1. Mumbai Indians:

P: 14; W: 7; L: 7

The winners of the competition last season, the Mumbai Indians had a sizzling start to the competition with skipper Rohit Sharma looking in world class form.

But their frailties as a team saw them end with just 7 wins from their 14 games in the group stage as they went crashing out of the tournament. They however, had some good moments with the likes of Pollard, Sharma and Krunal Pandaya, the new bloke in Indian cricket, providing some top class entertainment to the fans. It was a disappointing campaign overall for the squad who are strong enough to at-least move to the knock-out stage of the competition.

  1. Kolkata Knight Riders:

P: 15; W: 8; L: 7

Arguably the most popular side in the competition, two time IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders had a strange campaign this IPL.

They started off as one of the strongest outfits with the likes of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa scoring runs for fun. All rounder Andre Russel was also superb in the competition winning games single-handedly at times as they managed to qualify for the knock-out stage with a 4th placed finish, thanks to a win over SRH in the last game of the group stage.

However, they chocked and managed to lose the first eliminator at Delhi to the ultimate champions who knocked them out of the competition.

  1. Gujarat Lions:

P: 16; W: 9; L: 7

Another franchise that made its debut in the competition, the Gujarat Lions had a completely different campaign to the Pune Supergiants.

They were simply un-stoppable in the first half of the group stage winning matches at ease and have been one of the most entertaining outfit in the competition. The likes of Raina, Finch, McCullum and Bravo were exceptional throughout the season and took the team to the knock-out stages as they finished at the top of the table for the group stage.

However, they lost their qualifier to the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the eliminator to the Sunrisers Hyderabad to end their tremendous run in their debut campaign.

  1. Royal Challengers Bangalore:

P: 16; W: 9; L7

Breaking record after record game after game, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have dominated the Indian Premier League this season.

Virat Kohli with 963 runs in the competition has been unplayable this season and got some great support from the likes of Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers. They stitched a run of 4 consecutive victories at the fag end of the group stage to qualify for the next round with a 2nd placed finish.

They managed to step into the final with a victory over the Lions in the qualifier but fell just 8 runs short of their maiden IPL trophy as David Warner’s side clinched the title in their own back-yard.

  1. Sunrisers Hyderabad:

P: 17; W: 11; L: 6

The winners of the VIVO IPL 2016, the Sunrisers Hyderabad had a dream tournament this campaign.

They have a decent squad with the likes of David Warner, Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh and Mustafizur Rahman all making telling contributions as they managed to sneak into the qualifiers with a  3rd place finish in the group stage.

From then, SRH won 3 games in 5 days including the final at Bangalore to lift first ever IPL trophy in their history. They beat KKR in the first eliminator, the thumped the Lions in the second to set up a crunch tie against the RCB in the final.

A superb batting and bowling performance saw them stop RCB from chasing the target and won the game by 8 runs to set off celebrations across the city.
