Ravi Shastri is all set to apply for the post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team. The former Director of Indian cricket team confirmed the news to The Indian Express,
“Yes, I have decided to apply for the job,” he said.
Shastri worked as the director of Indian cricket team for a period of two years. He was given the job during India’s tour to England in the year 2014 and continued the role till T20 World Cup 2016. He was one of the aspirants to become the Head Coach of the side last year but lost the race to Anil Kumble, who threw his hat in the ring in the eleventh hour. After being not given the job, Shastri questioned Sourav Ganguly, a member of CAC saying that he was not present at the time of interview. Later, Ganguly defended himself by saying that Shastri was holidaying in Bangkok rather than being present for the interview in person. They both fired few shots at each other before the matter came to an end.
Shastri, this year, didn’t apply for the job but after Kumble resigned from his post, there were speculations that he will again put his name on the list. Though it was said that Shastri has told BCCI that he will only apply if he is confirmed the job. However, the former Indian all-rounder termed this as a wrong one.
With Shastri putting his name in the ring, it might be impossible for the CAC to ignore his application as he shares a good rapport with Indian skipper Virat Kohli, a fact which is open in public domain. CAC did not comply with the consent of Kohli at that time, and as a result, Kumble had resigned from the job as soon as his contract came to an end, despite being given an extension for one series.
Though, this time Shastri will have a competition with Virender Sehwag, who is a strong contender as Shastri.
However, the Indian fraternity would hope that Shastri doesn’t blame Sourav Ganguly again if not selected for the post. BCCI will announce the new Head Coach of Indian cricket team before the tour to Sri Lanka.
