Ravi Shastri has been appointed as the Head Coach of Indin cricket team till 2019 World Cup. He has stumped five other candidates in the race viz Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Phil Simmons and LalChand Rajput, who were in the fray of becoming the next Head Coach of the side, with Virender Sehwag being the strongest of all. The upcoming Sri Lanka series will be his first stint as the Head Coach of the Indian cricket team.
Shastri, previously, has had two stints with Indian cricket team in different roles. His first stint came as the team manager in the year 2007 where he travelled to Bangladesh. In the year 2014, he made a comeback in the backroom staff, this time in the capacity of team Director, a post which he held for around two years. During the period, he developed a strong bonding with Virat Kohli, who went on to become the Test captain of Indian cricket team in less than six months after Shastri took over the job.
Meanwhile, here is the video of India’s squad for SL tour:
Shastri’s stint as team Director had mixed results as though the team qualified for the semi-finals of two Wolrd Cups, but also lost home ODI series against South Africa. The loss against Bangladesh in 2015 was the biggest disappointment. A loss in the T20 game against Zimbabwe was also disheartening.
His name has come as a bit of surprise as the reports suggested that Virender Sehwag was the front runner for the job due to the fact that he was the lone candidate who was present in front of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) in person.Shastri again opted to appear for the interview via Skype but in the end, he emerged as the winner, trumping his main rival for the job – Virender Sehwag.
Shari has big boots to fill, left by Anil Kumble. His first challenge would be to ensure that team India clean sweep depleted Sri Lanka in the Test series as when last time India toured the country for the Test series in 2015 – the time when Shastri was Director – the visitors lost the first Test. Though they made a comeback in the series, that loss raised a lot of questions.
Following this series, Shastri would have a tough assignment ahead in form of series against Australia and South Africa. He will continue to be part of the backroom safe till 2019 World Cup and this time he has full control over the team as he is the Head Coach, unlike Director of team India.
