Ravi Shastri Tweaks India’s Training Style And It Is A Masterstroke
It has been just one Test but newly-appointed Team India head coach Ravi Shastri has already started making his mark on the team. The former India allrounder, who was also the team director between 2014 and 2016, has made some fine adjustments in the team’s preparation style and the results have already started coming. Due to the change, the batsmen are now prepared at any point of time to bat in the middle and Shastri has not achieved it by changing the batting order but by introducing a new practice of warming up before going down to the middle.
The method was on full display in the Galle Test where India thrashed Sri Lanka by 304 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Talking about the new method, India’s openers Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund had reached the ground before the rest of the squad with Shastri making it mandatory for them to do some batting practise in the nets just in case if the team bats first.
The decision turned out to be masterstroke as after Virat Kohli decided to bat first, Dhawan went on to score his career-best score of 190 off just 168 balls.
Later, when the openers went out to bat, number three batsman Cheteshwar Pujara had done his bit in the nets while Kohli was doing his practise. The method is a new one but has been very well received by the team. The motive behind this new method is that Shastri wants the team to exert its numero uno status on the field.
Before the Sri Lanka series, Shastri has said he would allow the players to express themselves on the field and he is doing exactly that. As per reports, in one of his first conversations with the team, he had told the players of the importance of enjoying the game before thinking of anything else.
“They know their job. They are professional cricketers. Once they step on the field they take over. That is how it should be,” he had said before the start of the series. “My role will be to get the guys to express themselves and play a fearless brand of cricket.
Well, these are still days but the signs are promising as of now and if Shastri manages to maintain the same intensity, the team can rule the world cricket in coming days.
