Indian veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had recently shed light on an incident where he revealed what exactly happened between him and Matt Renshaw during the second and penultimate Test of the three-match series against Australia at Bengaluru.
Taking trips down memory lane, Australia toured India for a three-match Test series in the year 2017 and were already 1-0 up in the series going into the second Test. Australian spinner Nathan Lyon ripped through the defences of the Indian batsmen in the first innings of the Bengaluru Test by bagging as many as eight wickets.
When Ravichandran Ashwin had an on-field tussle with Matt Renshaw
In reply, India gave absolutely everything on the field in an attempt to take wickets, but Matt Renshaw frustrated the Indian bowlers with his defensive approach. It was when Ravi Ashwin had an altercation with Renshaw.
During a live Instagram session with India’s dependable No.3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shed light on the incident and revealed as to what happened on the pitch.
“I remember one very, very crucial incident in the 1st innings. Nathan Lyon got 8 wickets in the 1st innings. Nathan Lyon was running riot but by the end of the 1st day, it stopped turning. It was damp. Anil bhai (Kumble) gave me quite a few suggestions. But I told him that we need to be patient as nothing is happening. Anil bhai said ‘yes, yes. I am not putting pressure on you but you have to do it,” Ashwin added.
Ravichandran Ashwin discloses why he sledged Matt Renshaw:
India’s premier off-spinner Ravi Ashwin revealed why he had actually sledged Matt Renshaw in the 2017 Bengaluru Test. Ashwin said he had lost his cool when Matt Renshaw smiled at him, suggesting that they were very much in complete control of the game.
“Next day when I was bowling, I started bowling over the stumps to Warner and Renshaw. I remember bowling to Renshaw, a couple of balls went here and there.. to short leg and he had this smirky smile so as to suggest they were on top of the game. All of a sudden, I got really angry because I was not getting the wickets and I told him ‘you better not defend and make these runs because if you don’t, 4th innings you guys won’t make 100 runs’. I was angry and said it but it eventually panned out,” Ravichandran Ashwin said.
However, Team India got the better of Australia and eventually won the game. Premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin accounted for six dismissals in the fourth innings as India finally went on to clinch the Test match including the series.
