In the 2010 Champions League, Ravichandran Ashwin had led down the hopes of the captain MS Dhoni after he failed to live up to the expectations. The spinner recalls the old incident when he played a significant role for Chennai Super Kings in 2010, but he had an unforgettable experience in one of the matches.
Ravichandran Ashwin was part of Chennai Super Kings’ victorious IPL campaign in 2010 and 2011 and Champions League T20 triumph in 2010 and 2014. He was the highest wicket-taker for the yellow army in the 2010 Champions League, but during the league, he had bizarre bowling performance in the match against Victoria Bushrangers.
In conversation with Cricbuzz, Ashwin revealed that when the game ended in super over against Victoria Bushrangers in Port Elizabeth, he voluntarily took the responsibility to bowl the super over. He thought it was a golden opportunity for him to guide the team to the victory.
“We were playing in South Africa against the Victoria Bushrangers. The game ended in a Super Over. I think I ended up with a wicket, I can’t recall. I think Raina bowled the last over and got us into a Super Over. We were standing in a huddle, Fleming just ran, there was a quick meet up. As they were all talking, I just put my hand up and said I want to bowl the Super Over. There was Doug Bollinger, there was Murali, but nobody volunteered for that. For me it felt like an opportunity to win a game for the team.”
I just tell myself – what the hell have you done?: Ravichandran Ashwin
However, Ashwin’s dream to win the match was reversed by captain David Hussey, who went on to hit three sixes to the spinner. He described that he tried to bowl quicker and quicker and yorkers but could not halt Hussey. Eventually, Victoria took away the game from CSK. In the end, MS Dhoni inquired Ashwin that why didn’t he bowl the carom ball as he masters in this bowling technique.
“I bowled that over, I succumbed to pressure, David Hussey hit me for a six and then I started chasing the over, I started bowling quicker and quicker. I bowled the yorkers and didn’t execute them. Now if I think back, I just tell myself – what the hell have you done?
“You wanted to bowl a Super Over, the man gave you a Super Over, CSK is a team that you wanted to be a part of, you wanted to be a performer and you have pushed your team out of the tournament now. You didn’t bowl the carom ball, you should have bowled it, you should have bowled it,” he said.
After that failure, Ashwin thought that he would not get any other chance, but Dhoni backed the spinner.
“I went to the game and I was warming up… I’ll tell you something if I was the captain, I wouldn’t have given the ball to a youngster who had done what he had done in the last game and MS gave me the ball [upfront] that night,” Ashwin said.
Now, Ravichandran Ashwin is the mainstay for India in the red-ball cricket, picking 365 wickets in 71 matches.
