Ravichandran Ashwin is leaving no stone un-turned before the start of the upcoming Indian Premier League. Ashwin has been appointed as the captain of the Kings XI Punjab and the skipper is quite motivated in order to perform well in the upcoming edition.
Punjab this year has spent very wisely and has built a strong squad on paper. However, the responsibility is now on the shoulders of the players to help the franchise clinch it maiden IPL title.
Ashwin is regarded as one of the most economical bowlers around the world. His skill to bowl at a decent economy rate in the power play overs gives him and his side an extra edge over the others.
He was one of the first spinners to bowl in the power play overs and started a transition thereafter.
Ashwin wants to change the perception about spinners in the shortest format of the game.
“I see a lot of responsibility in terms of getting the bowlers up to speed, especially in this day and age with T20 cricket, almost every bowler goes for runs irrespective of the quality of the bowler. That is the truth at the end of the day. If I can get a wrap around that and get the team to buy into it while overall turning things around as to how we see a T20 game, I would have achieved half my goals going into the league.”
“We have a couple of years ahead of us and we can really shape this team into a really strong unit.”
On the other hand director of cricket operations of Kings XI Punjab Virender Sehwag believes being a bowler will help Ashwin lead the side better as he believes the mentality of a bowler helps execute the plans better.
“I was a big fan of the captaincy of Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, and Wasim Akram – these are big name bowlers in world cricket who captained their side and delivered results. For instance, if a ground has an average score of 210 and if your bowlers bowl well and limit the opposition to 190, then the bowlers have done the batsmen’s job. And knowing the way bowlers think also helps a captain execute plans with them accordingly.’
