Ray Jennings disappointed with South Africa U19 team's performance
Former coach of the South African U19 team Ray Jennings admitted in an interview that he was simply disappointed by the progress of the South African side. The South Africans in the U19 World Cup in Bangladesh were simply poor and crashed out of the tournament after a shocking loss to Namibia. To compound their woes, they even lost their 9th place play off against Zimbabwe.
Jennings, who has also coached the IPL side Royal Challengers Bangalore in the past said that he expected more from the Proteas. The South Africans went into the tournament as the defending champions. “The formula used by the selectors to pick the team and the one used to pick the coach has clearly not worked,” Jennings told Netwerk24. Jennings also coached the South African U19 team till 2014, before he was replaced by Lawrence Mahatlane.
“It seems as though the team is not properly prepared for the tournament and there’s definitely a lack of motivation. The same mistakes are repeated and plans aren’t properly implemented. “It’s very sad for me – after I gave everything for the Under-19 team for eight years – to see what’s now happened to the team. It’s also frustrating that I couldn’t add any value these last two years,” Jennings added.
Jennings, who also worked with the Namibian U19 team, said that he had advised them about the ways of playing against the South African U19 team. “I gave them advice on how they should approach a match like this one against South Africa. You could see that, apart from having a lot of heart, the guys didn’t have much to offer. Not in my wildest dreams could I have foreseen that South Africa would lose to Namibia.”
