MS Dhoni have taken a lot of game-changing decisions both on field and off-field as he has turned into one of the best captains in the history of the game over time.
The Captain cool has failed at times with his decisions but has become successful with two of his decisions which has helped India win two World Cups. One of them was giving the ball to Joginder Sharma to bowl to Misbah Ul Haq in 2007 world cup final while the other one is he coming ahead of in-form Yuvraj Singh to bat in 2011 world cup final as India reached the glory on both occasions.
India need 165 runs to win as all the people across India expected Yuvraj Singh to come to bat. To surprise the entire nation, MS Dhoni came ahead of Yuvi and has helped India to chase the massive total. Many has criticized MS Dhoi’s decision as he decided to hold Yuvi back in such high profile game.
The scene was recently shown in MS Dhoni’s biopic MS Dhoni- The Untold Story and the following are the dialogues in the scene pictured.
“MS Dhoni: Excuse me, Gary. If a wicket goes down, I think I should go in.
Gary Kirsten: But, Yuvi is padded up and ready.
Dhoni: No, it is Murali, I think I should go in.
Gary Kirsten: You sure?
Dhoni: Just, tell him (Yuvraj), I will go.”
However, Team India’s India’s mental conditioning coach during the World Cup 2011, Paddy Upton has revealed the real reason for MS Dhoni coming ahead of Yuvi in an interview to Cricket Country.
He said: “Dhoni’s choice to go ahead of Yuvi was nothing short of a masterstroke. An excellent example of his gut-feel for the game.
“Yuvi [Yuvraj] had delivered so many great performances. He possibly had used up a lot of his mental energy, and his energy tanks were near empty. Dhoni’s were still pretty full, and he is possibly the best in the world game for taking on the high pressure to close a critical game for his team,” he added.
Upton also said that the moment he saw Dhoni walk out, he could sense what was about to happen. “When he walked out to bat, I turned to Gary Kirsten and said, “He’s going to go and fetch the World Cup for us,” he concluded.
