Kumar Sangakkara scored a massive 319 in the first innings of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh being played at Chittagong. Enroute to his triple century, Sangakkara smashed seven crucial records which puts him right up there with some of the best in the business. Let’s take a look at the seven records Kumar Sangakkara shattered as he played a marathon innings of 319 against a hapless Bangladesh bowling attack.

1. Second highest number of double tons in Test cricket

With his innings of 319, Sangakkara notched up his 9th double century in his test career – level with West Indian legend Brian Lara, and just 3 short of Sir Don Bradman’s 12.

2. Fastest to reach 11000 runs in Tests

By achieving the milestone of 11000 runs in just 208 innings, Sangakkara became the quickest to reach the 11,000 run mark in Test cricket, with Lara well behind on 232 innings.

3. Highest personal Test score

Sangakkara does have a knack for a big knock once in a while, and the Sri Lankan also notched up his own highest score in the test format, beating his 287 against the Proteas eight years back.

4. 3rd highest average in the 300 club

Sangakkara has the 3rd most impressive average among the elite group of batsmen who have scored a triple century in test matches. Only Sir Don Bradman and Wally Hammond can boast a better average.

5. Reached the 300 landmark with a six

Remember our very own Virender Sehwag smashing Pakistani off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq for a six to reach his triple ton at Multan in 2004? Sangakkara became only the second batsman in Test match history to reach the 300 mark with a six.

6. Highest score against Bangladesh

Sangakkara’s 319 is now the highest score by any batsman against the Bangladeshi tigers eclipsing the previous best by Ramnaresh Sarwan in Jamaica in 2004.

7. Highest score on Bangladesh soil

Marlon Samuels had smashed a 260 in Bangladesh only last year, but Sangakkara decided to own that record too and he managed to do it in style.

Well done Kumar Sangakkara. One of the BEST EVER.
