It was the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka which saw the Indian team escaping a narrow win against Sri Lanka despite stamping a total of 414 runs on the board. Batting first team India went on to score 414 runs and it was expected that team India will win the contest easily as scoring 400 runs in ODI at that time was something that was hard to imagine but the Sri Lankan batsman followed the target like a bee looking for honey and in the end narrowly missed a chance as they lost the match by a margin of just 3 runs.
