Hughes, unfortunately, played his last innings on 25th November 2014 during a Sheffield Shield game between New South Wales and South Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Hughes was looking in good touch and reached his half-century. The southpaw was batting on 63 when a short delivery from Sean Abbot struck him on the neck and he collapsed to the ground immediately. He received mouth to mouth resuscitation before being taken to St Vincent Hospital where he breathed his last 3 days later.
