The newly-appointed selection committee headed by MSK Prasad announced the 15-members squad for the first three matches of the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand and there were some really big surprises waiting for the cricket fans.
Suresh Raina, who last played in a One-Day International match in October 2015, made a comeback to the Indian team. But his selection is not the biggest surprise. The biggest one is the omission of star players Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. chairman of selectors MSK Prasad said Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin and Mohammed Shami have been rested.
Chairman of selectors, MSK Prasad said Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin have been rested. The Indian team has been scheduled to play 17 Tests in the current season. They have already played 6 of them while 11 matches are still left. The Indian team will play those matches at home and these two will have to play a big role as India will look to consolidate their position at the top of Test rankings.
Ashwin and Jadeja are two of the most important players for the Indian Test team and they have played a big role in India’s recent domination at home. They also played a crucial role in helping India take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand. With tougher tests awaiting the Indian team in the coming months as they will play against England and Australia in the coming months and India needs these two to be at their devastating best to defeat the visitors.
In Ashwin and Jadeja’s absence, Amit Mishra will look to spearhead the spin department. Axar Patel and newcomer Jayant Yadav are the other two spinners in the squad.
Here is the 15-man squad for the first three matches:
