Rishabh Pant may have been instructed by Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting to play more conservatively and stay longer in the middle according to spinner Brad Hogg of Australia.
Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has not looked like his usual dashing batsman in the ongoing season of Indian Premier League 2020.
Rishabh Pant May Have Been Told By Ricky Ponting To Be Conservative And Bat Right Through The Innings: Brad Hogg
Rishabh Pant has also failed to gain any momentum and play big innings for DC, something he has done in the past more than a few times. Although he is known as an explosive batsman who always takes charge against the bowling unit irrespective of pacers or spinners, he appears to be slightly calmer in the middle, and his strike rate has dipped considerably. He is yet to score a 50 in IPL 2020.
Former Australia bowler Brad Hogg thinks that Pant has been instructed by DC head coach Ricky Ponting to play more conservatively and stay longer in the middle.
“I think Rishabh Pant has been told by Ricky Ponting to play a little more conservative this year. He wants him to bat right through the innings, have a lot more ‘not outs’ against his name,” Hogg said in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel.
The batsman has scored 287 runs in 13 games so far at a below-par average of 28.70 and a strike rate of 109.12. His strike rate is the lowest among the top 50 leading run-scorers and matched only by another Delhi batsman Ajinkya Rahane whose is also struggling for form having a strike rate of 107.76 and average of 15.85.
Rishabh Pant Is An Entertainer Who Dominates Bowlers: Brad Hogg
Brad Hogg said that Rishabh Pant is an entertainer and holding him back as a batsman to build the innings is not in the best interests of Delhi Capitals. Rishabh Pant had an average of 37.53 in 2019 and 52.61 in 2018. In stark contrast to his low strike rate of 107.76 in 2020, his strike rate was more than 160 in 2017-2019.
“This guy is a maverick. He’s an entertainer. He goes out there and he dominates bowling attacks. You can’t hold him back. Look at the last couple of series, he’s had strike-rates of over-150. He has taken the game away from the opposition players,” Hogg said.
“Take the shackles off him ahead of the next match, let him loose and let him entertain the public please, Ricky Ponting. We want to see the best of Rishabh Pant,” he further added.
Delhi Capitals led by Shreyas Iyer will play the defending champions 4-time IPL winners Mumbai Indians in the final of IPL 2020 in Dubai on Sunday. It’s Delhi’s first appearance in an IPL final.
