The team management and selectors have always backed Rishabh Pant despite his poor performance. He is always under scanner because of his low performance and poor glove work. India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour believes that Pant can be a match-winner if he gets back his form.
The youngster is the replacement of MS Dhoni who is currently on a break. Many have said that Rishabh Pant is taking the pressure to perform like Dhoni while some opines that he has poor technique. But the team management has always shown faith in the 22-year-old.
In the last three matches against West Indies, Rishabh Pant scored 18, 33* and 0. In the last T20I, the Indian skipper promoted him to bat at No.3 but he didn’t stand on the hopes of Kohli as he got out on a duck.
Rathour said that pant is working hard on his fitness as well as on his game. He said that he is being given an opportunity again and again because Pant performed exceptionally well in the past.
“The reason why we keep discussing him is that he has got the immense ability and everybody believes that he can be an x-factor in any team and in the India team as well,” Rathour said on the eve of the ODI series opener against West Indies.
“He has been backed by the selectors and the team management because all of us believe that he is a good player… He is working hard on his game and hid fitness, so we are just hoping that he comes good. All of us believe that once he comes good, he can be a match-winner. He is being given opportunities because he has done well in the past. Once he starts getting runs, I am sure, he will be a massive player,” he added.
‘Rishabh Pant is really looking good in nets’
Vikram Rathour said that Pant’s performance against West Indies was satisfactory. In Thiruvananthapuram, he played a mature innings when the top-order batsmen lost their wickets early. In the sluggish pitch, he remained not out adding unbeaten 33 runs in India’s scoreboard. But his further mistakes can cost him as Sanju Samson is knocking on the door to get an opportunity.
“I don’t think that time has arrived yet. He is really looking good in the nets. He has played some reasonable innings in the last three matches. Even in the last game he was asked to do a certain job which he did and that’s what the team looks for,” Rathour said.
