Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has opined that Rishabh Pant should not try to become MS Dhoni, but the youngster needs to be the best version of himself. He has also urged the media to stop drawing comparisons between the two wicketkeeper-batsman.
The youngster was seen as the successor of MS Dhoni in Team India but his sub-standard performance since the last year has even put his position in doubt. And now having a below-par Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020, Rishabh Pant is under the scanner. In 12 matches, he has only scored 285 runs, with 38 runs being his highest score. The Delhi Capitals youngster has managed only the strike rate of 109.61.
Gautam Gambhir stated that one of the reasons for Pant’s downfall was the comparison of him with the veteran MS Dhoni. He said that DC player had to stop thinking of being the next Dhoni, but he had to create his own name.
Cricketer-turned-politician said that Pant could not become Dhoni just because he has the ability to hit sixes like the latter.
“You have to stop comparing Rishabh Pant that he is an alternative to MS Dhoni. That is one thing which the first media needs to do it. Because the more media talks about it, the more he starts thinking on that front. He can never be MS Dhoni. He has to be Rishabh Pant. And, at the same time, MS Dhoni had so much of range when he came on the scene. And, Rishabh Pant, just because he can hit sixes, people started comparing him with MS Dhoni,” Gambhir told ESPNCricinfo.
Gautam Gambhir suggests Rishabh Pant improve in all areas:
Apart from improving his batting, Gautam Gambhir advised Pant also to polish his wicketkeeping skills. But he reiterated that foremost, the media should put a halt on drawing a comparison with the two.
”Rishabh Pant has a lot to improve, especially from the keeping point of view, but from the batting point as well. But then if I see, the bowlers have got smarter, they have started bowling wider outside the off-stump and he has struggled. That’s the reason, first and foremost, people around him and in the media need to stop comparing him with MS Dhoni, ” Gautam Gambhir added.
Rishabh Pant has the last chance to turn the table when Delhi Capitals play their second qualifier match on November 8.
