Rishabh Pant failed to perform up to expectations as he tried to imitate MS Dhoni in some aspects which hurt his game according to former chief selector MSK Prasad. The former India wicketkeeper MSK Prasad explained how the youngster has failed to perform at the highest level of the game despite making a bright start. Rishabh Pant started his international career on a stunning note by scoring Test centuries in England and Australia.
However, things have not unfolded expectantly in recent months. Rishabh Pant debuted in 2017 in T20I and 2018 in ODIs and Tests and has featured in 13 Tests, 15 T20Is and 28 T20Is. Although he has an average of 44.35 in Tests where he scored two centuries and two fifties, his average is just 26.21 in ODI and 20.50 in T20I which is emphasized by the fact that he has just one fifty in ODI and two in T20I. He has however scored two Test tons and two half-centuries in Tests.
Rishabh Pant Fails As KL Rahul And Wriddhiman Saha Replaced Him In 2020
Towards the start of 2020, Rishabh Pant lost his place in the playing eleven across formats. At the start of the home season last year, India recalled veteran Wriddhiman Saha in the playing eleven to keep the wickets on the turning pitches. The decision turned out to be a masterstroke as Wriddhiman Saha did a splendid job behind the stumps.
India persisted with Rishabh Pant in both the ODI and T20I teams as MS Dhoni was unavailable. since the 2019 World Cup. However, the left-handed batsman failed to grab the opportunity. He suffered a concussion during the first ODI against Australia in January and KL Rahul kept wicket when India took the field. Since then, Rishabh Pant has been on the bench in the limited-overs format. He was recalled to the playing eleven in Tests during the tour of New Zealand this year but failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
MSK Prasad Explains Reasons Behind Rishabh Pant’s Failures
MSK Prasad explained the reasons behind Rishabh Pant’s failure and said that he started comparing himself with his idol MS Dhoni and even tried to copy him in some aspects, which hurt his game. MSK Prasad also stated that comparisons with the legendary MS Dhoni were also not helping the southpaw’s cause.
“Every time when Rishabh steps in, he is always compared with MS Dhoni, and probably, he is also getting caught in that euphoria. Many times, we spoke to him that he has to get over it,” MSK Prasad told Sportskeeda.
“He always was in this shadow of MSD. He started comparing himself with him. He started sort of copying him, even in mannerisms and all, if you see the way he does all that sort of stuff,” he added.
MS Dhoni retired from international cricket on Independence Day in 2020 which will give the likes of Rishabh Pant ample chances. MS Dhoni’s retirement will also take some pressure off him. At present, he is gearing up for IPL 2020 for Delhi Capitals which gets underway in UAE on September 19 onwards.
