Rohan Mustafa to Lead UAE in the Asia Cup Qualifier
Rohan Mustafa will lead the United Arab Emirates (UAE) team in the upcoming Asia Cup qualifier scheduled to take place between August 29 to September 6 in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, they will compete against hosts Malaysia, Hong Kong, Nepal, Oman, and Singapore in their bid to book their place in the Asia Cup 2018. Moreover, UAE will host this edition of the tournament starting from September 15.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will fight out in the opener while India will play their first game on September 17. The arch-rivals India and Pakistan will clash on September 18, the first time since the Champions Trophy last year.
So far, there have been 13 Asia Cup tournaments starting from 1984. India won the first Asia Cup title beating Sri Lanka and since then went on to win another five. On the other hand, Sri Lanka had won five while Pakistan had managed to win only twice.
However, UAE will have to put in a much-improved effort to give themselves a chance to qualify. They have managed to win only three of the ten games they have played this year.
The Cheif Selector of Emirates Cricket Board, Waleed Bukhatir admitted that securing a place in the Asia Cup is of utmost importance. He also sounded confident that his players will do well to ensure the final berth.
“Securing our place to compete in the 2018 Asia Cup, which is being hosted on home-soil, is of the utmost importance. Our players and the coaching team have been exceptionally committed to their training throughout the summer, and we are confident they will put forward a winning performance and secure the remaining place (in the Cup),” he said.
