Rohit Sharma compares Shreyas Iyer to Virender Sehwag
India’s flamboyant opener Rohit Sharma has drawn comparisons between the latest batting sensation of India, Shreyas Iyer, and former opener Virender Sehwag. Iyer, who made a mark for himself in the previous IPL has set the ongoing Ranji Trophy on fire.
The Mumbai batsman has by far been the leading run getter for Mumbai, and played a high strike rate. While batting along with Iyer against Punjab in Mumbai, Rohit felt that there were certain similarities between him and Sehwag.
“I had heard from people in our Mumbai dressing room that he’s been in good nick. I’m glad with the way he is batting. I was enjoying it from the other end. He reminded me of Sehwag a little bit, because that’s how he used to bat. He batted pretty well. Whatever he’s been doing of late, it’s pretty good to see that,” Rohit said.
Rohit also stressed on the fact that Iyer was special because of his aggressive approach. “An attacking batsman is always important for any side in any format. It takes the momentum away from the opposition.
“When someone bats like he did today… it took the game away from UP. It was pretty difficult for them to come back after the kind of knock he played. So, it makes a huge difference to have someone like him in the team who goes after the bowling right from ball one.
“The kind of shots he played today was amazing. The one four over covers off Bhuvneshwar Kumar those are the shots you dream about playing,” he said.
Rohit also had a piece of advice for Iyer as he said, “capitalize on the good form as much as possible, because you never know when you get a bad patch. When the runs aren’t coming, these are the runs which will help you. So, get as many hundreds and runs as possible.”
