Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara has lavished praise on Rohit Sharma, calling him graceful as well as devastating, as the India opener’s stunning century took India over the line in the fifth and final One-Day International against Australia on Sunday (October 1).
Rohit, who entered the series against the world champions on the back of some outstanding outings in the Champions Trophy and in Sri Lanka, did not have the best of starts to the series as he could manage only 28 and 7 in the first two games. However, his love affair with the Australian team soon rekindled as he scored two consecutive half-centuries. He was looking right to score centuries on both the occasions but missed out somehow.
However, the 30-year old did not commit the same mistake in the final game at Nagpur as he slammed 125 off 109 including 11 fours and five sixes to help India clinch the five-match series 4-1.
The right-handed batsman has been garnering praise from all over for his extraordinary exploits with the bat on the cricket field and received a special compliment from Sangakkara too. The batting legend took to Twitter to write: “@ImRo45 [Rohit Sharma] just keeps getting better and better. Graceful and devastating at the same time. Well played.”

Meanwhile, during his knock, Rohit Sharma also broke Sourav Ganguly’s record of quickest to 2000 ODI runs in India. Rohit achieved the feat in 42 innings while Ganguly had taken 45 innings for the same.
The century which was his sixth against Australia and is now joint-second on the list of most centuries against Australia in the 50-over format. He is now only behind his illustrious former teammate Sachin Tendulkar who has scored nine centuries against the team from Down Under.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Rohit had said he loves playing against the Australians.
“I would love to have such a record against all the teams. Love playing against the Australians, they’re competitive and never give anything easily. That probably brings out the best,” Rohit had said.
