Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper has confirmed that he will be opening the innings for his franchise in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 slated to start from 19th September. There has been a lot of talks doing the rounds over his batting position over the last couple of seasons.
Also, with multiple players available for the role, a few reckon that Rohit Sharma, being the best batsman in the line-up, should bat at three or four and forge partnerships by building the innings.
However, he hasn’t been extremely successful at the top of the order over the last couple of seasons. Though Indians won the tournament last year, Rohit Sharma could only score 405 runs in 15 matches at an average of 28.93 and strike-rate of 128.57 while opening the innings.
This time around, even Chris Lynn is available to bat at the top but the Australian is unlikely to get more chances given the fact that only 4 overseas players feature in playing XI.
Rohit Sharma Clarified Stance On Being Mumbai Indians Opener
Rohit Sharma and the MI coach Mahela Jayawardene attended a virtual press conference two days ahead of the tournament opener against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). During the session, the former was asked the question of his batting position in the team and Rohit Sharma clarified his stance on the matter.
However, he also added that he is open to making any changes according to the requirements of the team.
“I opened the entire tournament last year and I will continue to do that. I will keep all options open as per team needs,” the Hitman said.
Rohit Sharma has played since IPL’s inaugural season 2008 and has scored 4898 runs in 188 matches averaging 31.6. He has also picked up 15 wickets the bulk of which came in 2009. It was under his captaincy that Mumbai Indians won four titles in 2013,2015,2017 and 2019-every alternate odd year since 2013.
Rohit Sharma Is One Option To Open Alongside Quinton De Kock And The Other Options Are Chris Lynn And Ishan Kishan
Quinton de Kock is a certainty for opening the innings for MI but there has been a debate over his partner. For now, Sharma has cleared that he will be taking up the role but if he is injured or prefers not to open, the other options available with the team are Chris Lynn and Ishan Kishan.
Even Suryakumar Yadav has donned the role in the IPL 2018 and amassed a lot of runs. But he batted at three and four last year and it remains to be seen if he will be promoted again this year. Suryakumar Yadav scored 512 and 424 runs in the last two seasons.
