After yet another top-order failure, India were looking set to get restricted for a modest total in the semifinal against Australia that was reduced to 42 overs per side due to rain.
Smriti Mandhana’s poor form continued with the bat as she departed for just 6. She was soon joined by her fellow opener Punam Raut (14). A 66-run stand between Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur helped India to cross the 100-run mark but just when it looked like the duo would shift gears, Kirsten Beam bowled Mithali to leave India reeling at 101 for 3 with just 17 overs remaining.
However, what followed thereafter not only stunned Australia but one and all by surprise. After completing his fifty off 64 balls, Harmanpreet Kaur launched a stunning attack on the Australian team to power India to a massive 281 for 4 in the allotted 42 overs. The 28-year old scored her third One-Day International off just 90 balls. But she was not done yet as she scored 71 more runs to put the Women’s in Blue firmly in command of the proceeding at Derby. Her 171-run knock came off just 115 balls and was studded with a staggering 20 fours and 7 sixes.
And while Harmanpreet’s amazing power-hitting has taken everyone by surprise, India batting star Rohit Sharma is not an exception either. The right-handed batsman took to Twitter to praise the knock.
“That’s brutal power by @ImHarmanpreet! Hope it turns out to be a match winning knock ?. Some serious hitting there. #WWC17 @BCCIWomen,” the India opener tweeted.
