Before the ongoing home Test series, Indian limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was struggling to enter in the playing XI in Test cricket. He was not consistent in Test cricket, where he generally batted at the middle-order before this series.

Meanwhile, the team management was not finding the proper opening partners in Test cricket. As Rohit is very much experienced and hugely successful as a limited-overs opening batsman, the selectors decided to observe him as a Test opener in the ongoing home Test series. Before this Test series, he never played as a Test opener.
Many former cricketers supported this experiment. However, some have come out with their doubts as they believe that Test cricket and limited-overs cricket are totally different.
Finally, Rohit played as an opening batsman in the first Test of the ongoing three-match Test series against South Africa. In that Test match at Visakhapatnam, Rohit scored 176 and 127 runs.

He failed to achieve success in the Pune Test where he scored 14 runs in the first innings. However, he has crushed many doubts with his brilliant knock in the ongoing Ranchi Test.
After winning the toss in this Ranchi Test, India decided to bat first and went down to 39/3. However, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane handled that pressure situation superbly. Later, in that innings, Rohit completed his maiden double century in Test career. Finally, he lost his wicket after scoring 212 runs. He and Rahane (115 runs) played very crucial roles for the hosts who settled the first innings total of 497/9 decl.

In the ongoing Test series, Rohit has already scored 529 runs in four innings with a superb average of 132.25. After the first innings in Ranchi Test, Rohit has become the fourth most run-scorer as an Indian batsman in the three-match Test series.

At the end of day two of Ranchi Test, Rohit took a dig the media.
Rohit said, “Wanted to use the opportunity to full. Otherwise a lot would have been said and written (about my Test career). You folks write a lot about me. Now you will write some good things I hope.”
While it was the first Test double-century for Rohit, it was also his sixth Test century. He feels that it was the most challenging knock in his Test career.
India are already leading the three-match Test series by 2-0. They are now busy to register another victory in the ongoing Ranchi Test. At the stumps on day two of this Test match, South Africa were struggling on 9/2.
