Rohit showed why he is such a good ODI player: Virat Kohli
Indian captain Virat Kohli had reasons to smile post a thumping victory against arch-rivals Pakistan. Having lost the toss, India was put in to bat first by Sarfaraz Ahmed. Openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul took matters in their own hand from there on. The duo put on a stand of 136 runs for the first wicket and Rohit went on to hit 140, helping India post 336/5 in their 50 overs.
Kohli on the thumping win
Post the 89-run win (D/L), Kohli revealed that he too would have bowled first as the over-head conditions would have favored the bowlers. Pakistan were indiscipline and failed to bowl in the right areas. And on top of that, a few half chances didn’t go their way as they saw India escalate in no time. To be honest, the pitch wouldn’t have made much of a difference. The only factor that I thought was different was that the pitch started turning towards the last half of our innings. We wanted to bowl first in overcast conditions as the pitch had something in it, and if we bowled in the right areas, there was enough for the bowlers.” Kohli said.
Rohit has been a phenomenal fin in white-ball cricket and the nack of scoring big runs helps the middle-order in shedding some pressure. Kohli praised his deputy and pointed out the importance of having someone like Rohit in the side.
“The template has been really nice in the first three games till now – Rohit single-handedly winning us the first game, a team effort in the second and today was Rohit’s day again. You could say that to get to 330, you need a team effort, KL set a great foundation with Rohit and Rohit after getting to 70-75 is unstoppable and he showed again why he’s such a good ODI player. It allowed me to play a certain kind of role and it allowed Hardik to come and explode in the end. Well, it has worked till now, gives us a lot of solidity in the middle and it is a role that I am happy playing for the team. It is going really nicely at the moment.” the skipper added.
Kohli on giving Kuldeep an extended spell
Chasing a daunting target of 337, Pakistan looked on course until Kuldeep Yadav brought India back in the game. The second-wicket stand of 104 runs between Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam made India think but the wrist spinner send back both the batters in quick succession. Kohli knew that batters were trying to see of Yadav’s spell and thus he was given an extension. “Kuldeep was brilliant, those guys were only trying to play him out. A longer spell helped in that situation and he was getting into rhythm. They were thinking that he would go out of the attack sooner rather than later. That ball to dismiss Babar was just outstanding with the drift, the turn and just beating the batsman batting so well. This is the best he has been bowling since coming to England and him confident with Chahal is going to be an important factor for us in the tournament”. the 30-year old pointed out.
