Root believes England can turn things around in summer

The Test series between New Zealand and England ended in a fashion that most of the fans would have wanted to but for England, it added more disappointment to their winter season as they lost yet another series.

New Zealand secured a 1-0 series win after they held on for a draw on the last day of the final Test courtesy of Neil Wagner and Ish Sodhi’s solid temperament. The duo stood strong at the crease for more than 30 overs.

Earlier, England also suffered a horrific 4-0 Test defeat against their arch rivals Australia in Ashes.

But England captain Joe Root believes the horrible memories of the winter will not effect his side in summer.

“There will be a lot of frustrated people at home and a lot of frustration within the side. We’ve not performed to our ability and not got the results we wanted – it’s been very disappointing. We’re nowhere near the finished article, or where we want to be as a side but I do think we’ve got some very talented cricketers in this format,” Root said.

“We’ll take a lot of confidence from how it’s worked this week I hope we can build on it and have a very successful summer,” Root added.

The England captain also have firm belief that there are players who have the ability to do special things in an England shirt.

“I do think they are some very talented players who are capable of special things in an England shirt. It’s up to them to go and prove it at county level,” Root concluded.

On the other hand, a happy New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson appreciated the English team for their never give up attitude and he believes except their poor performance in Auckland, England showed no signs of a hangover from the Ashes.

“I thought they were eager to come out and perform well so it was nice to get the start that we did in Auckland. To then come here, their motivation to get a win would have been even more and they played very well. It was a very tough Test match, they were very demanding especially with the ball,” Kane said.

Meanwhile, the hero of the Test match Ish Sodhi who batted for exactly 200 minutes and faced 168 balls praised his partner Neil Wagner who played 103 deliveries and spent 107 minutes at the crease.

“I’m rapt,” said Sodhi. “There was a bit of drama at the end but Waggy [Wagner] was really good there. He kept me going. The whole time I was just thinking about playing as straight as I could. They started bowling bumpers around the wicket and I found them quite hard to pick up so there were tough periods.”
