After the unanimous choice, members of the Sri Lanka national selection committee is expected to serve as team managers during the national A and Emerging tour which is slated to be played in a few day’s time. The announcement was made by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC). Meanwhile, Roy Dias and Avishka Gunawardene were selected as the coaches of A and emerging sides respectively.
It was former Sri Lanka batsman Roy Dias who was appointed as the coach of the A team as Sri Lanka will be on their tour to India in May this year. Meanwhile the national selector, Chaminda Mendis is expected to feature as the Team Manager for that particular tour.
Meanwhile, it must be noted that Roy Dias has prior experience of coaching Sri Lanka youth teams. He has coached the U-19 Sri Lanka team in the past when Sri Lanka hosted the Youth Asia Cup. Dias was also in charge of the Sri Lanka U-19 team during the 2018 ICC U-19 World Cup. Roy Dias has also coached Nepal and Malaysia apart from coaching Sri Lankan national team.
It must be noted that the former Sri Lanka opener Avishka Gunawardena previously coached Sri Lanka A and was also the batting coach for the national team. He will now coach the Emerging team on their tour to South Africa in June. Hemantha Wickramaratne was appointed as the Team Manager of the tour. Apart from his new role, he will continue to don the national selector’s hat.
Asantha de Mel who has his name stalked in the history books after bowling the first delivery for Sri Lanka in Tests is expected to be the Team Manager for the upcoming World Cup in England. He is also a chairman of selectors in Sri Lanka and will work as one during the quadrennial event slated to be played in England and Wales from 30th May.
