SA vs AUS 2018: It’s Been an Unbelievable Journey – Morne Morkel

The tall and lanky pacer from South Africa, Morne Morkel will hang his boots on a positive note after a series win against Australia. Meanwhile, this is South Africa’s first series win against the Aussies since readmission.

The host had dominated the match at Johannesburg to win it by a record margin of 492 runs.

Meanwhile, the Aussies failed to recover from the off-field controversies that took place last week. Although, skipper Tim Paine tried desperately to put things into place but failed.

Further, it was a magical spell from Vernon Philander that sealed the series for the host. The right-arm pacer returned with six for 21, as Australia collapsed for 119 runs.

Meanwhile, Morkel had an outstanding series to put curtains on his international career. In the three Tests he featured, Morkel claimed 15 wickets including a nine-wicket haul. South Africa banked on his efforts to go 2-1 up at Cape Town.

Although, he sustained a side strain yesterday (April 2nd) but returned to help his team create history. In Australia’s second essay, Morkel bowled 10.2 overs picking two crucial wickets at the top.

Further, the pacer bowled the delivery that saw Australia losing their last wicket courtesy a runout.

Morkel’s teammate gave him a guard of honour while going out of the field. Post-match, Morkel was filled with emotions and talked highly about the South African cricket culture. Stating that it was an unbelievable journey, Morkel says he will miss all of this.

“It’s tough to put in words; emotional. It’s been a great journey. The mission was to beat the Aussies in the home turf. To accomplish that feels great. Thank you Vernon Philander. He was on the money today morning. We are going to celebrate hard today. Funny how things work out. The main thing is to keep working hard. Today, I’m saying goodbye to special players. There was no way I was sitting in the changing room. I am just happy I got through a couple of overs and got to enjoy the atmosphere for the last time. A special bunch of players – my brothers. I will miss them a lot. It’s been an unbelievable journey,” Morkel said after the match.

Meanwhile, Cricket South Africa presented a small retirement token to acknowledge his contribution. He elaborated the story from yesterday and thanked all the sponsor and supporters for the support.

The injury wasn’t nice. I told the doctor to do whatever he can to do to get me back on the field. But Vern was outstanding today, the way he came out and landed the ball was just superb. Thank you so much, the last couple of weeks have been exceptional. I have had twelve years of support and tears. I can only be the man I am because of this fantastic culture and environment. A huge thank you to all the sponsors and to Supersport for all that they’ve done for me,” he added.

The 33-year old Morkel represented South Africa in all the formats. He played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is for the Proteas claiming 309, 188, and 47 wickets, respectively.
