Sachin Tendulkar Feels Yo-Yo Test Should Not Be Sole Criteria For Selection
Of late, Yo-Yo test has become a regular headliner in Indian cricket in particular. It plagued the career of many cricketers and became a barricade for their way to break into the Indian team.
Though Virat Kohli calls it an important practice, the legendary Sachin Tendulkar feels it should not be the main criterion for the selection procedure.
It should be a mixture of fitness and ability: Tendulkar
The all-time great Tendulkar stated that Yo-Yo shouldn’t be the solo selection standards. He felt they should look after various mixtures of fitness and the ability of the player.
Despite all, Sachin calls fielding department as crucial for the team.
“I feel certain fielding standards are critical. Now, I haven’t done the Yo-Yo Test. We had the beep test, which is more or less similar. But that shouldn’t be the only criterion. It should be a mixture of fitness and also be looking at the ability of a player. I think the Yo-Yo test is important but also looking at the ability of the player and how to fit or unfit the player is, ” said Tendulkar while speaking to PTI.
Missed opportunity to test Rayudu at number 4:
The failure in Yo-Yo test saw the likes of Ambati Rayudu and Sanju Samson stay out of the team. Rayudu had an exceptional season with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) which paved a way for his selection in the Indian team.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t clear the test and was eventually, replaced by Suresh Raina.
The stylish southpaw, Raina failed to show his class which furtherly dent India to lose the series.
Meanwhile, the trial of Rayudu at number four place has also extended. Similar to it, Samson has been excluded from India – a player who was in a golden touch with his willow.
However, as Sachin Tendulkar said, selection criteria should be based on the ability of a player and the certain fitness standards.
The exclusion of Rayudu, Samson and the inclusion of out-of-form (but passed Yo-Yo test) Raina has been the example of it.
All in all, it would be interesting to see whether BCCI considers the suggestion made by the brand ambassador of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar.
However, Kohli’s decision also holds a key.
