Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray are part of the list of the water bill defaulters named by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on its website, according to media reports.

 India Today reports that the list was put up on the BMC’s website on January 16, 2014 following orders from the Information Commissioner of the state, after a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by a Wadala resident.

The report further reveals that a total of more than Rs. 1,000 crore is due from over 200,000 defaulters, which also includes the most revered cricketer in India -Sachin Tendulkar.

Following this shocking revealation action is usually taken keeping in view the amount that has to be cleared in the case of each and every individual defaulter.

“During every billing cycle, we prepare a list of top 100 or 500 defaulters. Action is taken against anyone featuring in this list,” a BMC official stated.

Bill payments made after the period of 45 days are often subject to legal action afterwards.

Tendulkar recently retired in the midst of huge reception from fans at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai against the West Indies in the second and last Test of the series, which was also the little master’s 200th Test match. The Rajya Sabha member is the only player to have played 200 Test matches.
