Clarke’s all-time team includes no surprises as he has selected probably the best bunch of players cricket has ever had. All the selected players included in the team has been a veteran in this field and have been best players for their own respective sides. Out of the selected players, only one player is an active player now and rest have all retired from cricket.

In the Shane Warne-led squad announced by Michael Clarke, he has included 7 Australian players, two South African players, one Indian player, one Sri Lankan player and one player from West Indies. Here s the list of player ended by Shane warner and the reason why he has included them in the squad.

Clarke has supported his decision to select a player by writing his thoughts after the name of each player.  Here is the  list of players selected by Michael Clarke –

Opening batsman Michael Slater

Michael Slater will be opening the innings for Michael Clarke all-time best XI. The former opening batsman of Australia has played a total of 74 Test and 42 ODI’s for Australia. He possesses an average of 42.83 in Test cricket. He was one the best aggressive batsman Australia has ever had and was known for his brilliant stroke play.

Michael Clarke: “My first cricket hero, I fell in love with the refreshing, exuberant attitude Slats brought to the game. I didn’t play international cricket with him, but was lucky to share the field with him on a number of occasions for New South Wales.”

Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden

A strongly built left-handed batsman, Matthew Hayden, has been chosen to open the innings with Slater. Hayden was one of the reliable players in the Aussie squad. No matter the form of the game, he used to play his natural game irrespective of the format. Known for his big hitting, Hayden has been the backbone of his team for a long period of time. He used to give nightmares to bowlers withs aggressive style of play and brilliant shots.

Michael Clarke: “Having certain players in a team makes everyone walk taller. Matthew Hayden was like that in the Australian team I came into. Physically and psychologically, he could dominate the best attacks.”

Ricky Ponting

The most successful captain for Australia, Ricky Ponting, was the probably the best batsman and captain cricket fraternity has ever seen. He was the main force behind the success of Australia in the early part of 20th Century which lasted till 2009/10.  Though he had a rough ending to his limited-overs career but still has been the most successful captain in world cricket.

Michael Clarke: He was a such a supreme batsman and mentor to young players, but if I could put his legacy in a nutshell, I would say that I most admired him for his performances with the bat when his country needed him most.”

Sachin Tendulkar

The master blaster has also found a spot in Clarke’s all-time XII. Currently, the highest run scorer in One day and Test format, Sachin was and still is the icon of the game. He was not just a player but an inspiration for millions following this sports.

Michael Clarke: “The Indian master had the best batting technique I have ever seen. Sometimes you know that you have met your superior, and that was what Sachin was for me…”

Brian Lara

Remembered for more than his score of 400*, Lara was not just a batsman but he was a separate class.  His footwork and bat lift were totally something which one had seen earlier. Till now, the world is waiting for anotherLara but no one has come up with qualities like him.

Michael Clarke: “I only played against him in the last years of his career, but he had been my idol since I was a little boy.”

Jacques Kallis –

Jacques Kallis

He was a rare species of player which is hardly found nowadays contributing to each and every aspect of the game equally, irrespective  of the format. He was what Sachin Tendulkar was to batting and what Kapil Dev was to bowling

Michael Clarke: “Jacques Kallis ended his career with a better batting average than Sachin Tendulkar and more wickets than Brett Lee…the complete cricketer, he couldn’t be left out of any World Test 12.”

Adam Gilchrist

He along with Matthew Hayden revolutionize the game of cricket. They used to provide a great start to their team always. He played 3 world cups in his career and ended up being the ultimate winner always.

Michae Clarke: “Because his batting revolutionized the game and drew all the attention, people underrated him as a wicketkeeper, and he was also the best vice-captain I ever knew”.

Mitchell Johnson

Not a Jacques Kallis of cricket but yes he also used to score hundreds whenever he got an opportunity. Johnson was one of the fearsome bowlers of his time, sheer dominance can be the word to describe him and his playing style.

Michael Clarke: “The greatest athlete I played with. He scored Test centuries and took many great catches, as well as being a great all-round fielder. He was a very quiet individual, but when he walked on the field he gave everything.

“His bowling, at its best, was terrifying, unplayable.”

Shane Warne

Despite being surrounded with controversies on and off the field, Warne used to germinate and come up with great performances ever seen on a cricket field. His vicious turn even on unfriendly wickets was his best weapon.

Michael Clarke: “It doesn’t take me to say he was the greatest spin bowler of all time. But I also think he was the best captain Australia never had. His insight into the game, from every aspect – tactical, physical, psychological – is second to none.”

Dale Steyn

It is correctly said that a fast bowler do has many restrictions in his career, fitness being the biggest issue of all time. With time they lose their charm and aura as  the time move forward. Still, they leave a great impact on us and our mind. Steyn is one of the dominant bowlers when in his top form. He remained the number 1 Test bowler for a long period of time which is enough to tell about his stature and bowling.

Michael Clarke: “As skillful bowler with a reverse swing as anyone, he could also crank it up to over 150 km/h. We had some great battles on the field as we gave everything to the get our countries on top. I value the runs I scored against him more highly than any others.”

Glenn McGrath

Not much pace but still a great bowler. McGrath was the best new ball bowler Australia and has been a key behind their Ashes wins many times.

Michael Clarke: “The best fast bowler I’ve ever played with or against. Not the fastest, but definitely one of the smartest and most skillful”.

Muttiah Muralitharan: (12th man)

Muttiah Muralitharan

Th highest wicket taker two formats of the game Murali was a nightmare for a batsman when it comes to spin bowling. He used to exert pressure on batsman even before he bowled as his busy action and facial expressions used to fear a batsman.

Michael Clarke: When conditions were hard for him he was tight and persistent. When they favored him, he was a nightmare.

“I loved facing spin and that was a strength of my game, but Murali challenged my skills to the utmost with every ball he bowled.”
