Salman Butt, Mohammed Asif included in PSL 2017 players draft

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt and Mohammed Asif have been included in the draft list for the second season of Pakistan Super League which is set to take place in 2017.

Both the players have served their ban after found guilty of spot-fixing in 2010 during the England tour. They were initially banned for ten years but the ban was later reduced to five years as they completed the ban imposed on them in September 2015.

Another cricketer who was involved was Mohammed Amir who made his international return last year and has been constantly representing the Pakistan national team since then. The two veteran players, however, has failed to break into the national team as Mohammed Asif have been playing some domestic cricket in Norway for the past few months.

Amir has played for Karachi Kings in the first edition of PSL but Salman Butt and Asif were completely ignored for the inaugural edition as they have the chance to play in the high-profile T20 league in the second edition now.

Butt has been included in the Gold category of the players draft while Asif has been named in the lower Silver category as the players’ draft is set to be held around 18th or 19th this month as the league is set to be played next year in February in UAE.

Both the players are currently playing in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy first class competition for WAPDA but have failed to get going in two innings. However, they are hopeful of getting picked by one of the franchises which will give them a chance to showcase their talent in the biggest T20 league of Pakistan.

“It is a big step forward after the ban to be called up for the PSL. But I am nervous whether any franchise will pick me,” Salman Butt told PTI on Friday.

“I feel remorse and guilt for the past but my faith is stronger now and I can just hope and pray for better things to happen now,” he added.

The inaugural edition of PSL has been a huge hit which has seen some of the high profile names in foreign cricket set to be featured in the second edition. Brendon McCullum, England’s ODI captain Eoin Morgan, Alex Hales, Sunil Narine, Kieran Pollard, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, Steve Finn, Wayne Parnell, Albie Morkel, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Carlos Braithwaithe, Jason Holder, Jason Roy, Stuart Broad, etc added to the overseas players list in different categories.

Pakistan Cricket Board are also confident that they can manage to host the final of PSL-2 in iconic Gadaffi stadium in Lahore next year.
