Former India opener Gautam Gambhir feels the sanctions on Australia’s disgraced trio in the wake of the ball tampering scandal is “harsh.”
Cricket Australia came down hard on Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft following the scandal. While Smith and Warner have been handed a 12-month ban, Bancroft has been handed a nine-month ban.
But while the incident drew widespread criticism, many feel that Cricket Australia’s treatment was harsh. On Thursday, India opener Rohit Sharma and South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis came out in support of Smith. The disgraced Australian batsman had broken down while addressing the media in Sydney.

Gambhir also came out in support of the players. At the same time, he also had an interesting take on the issue. The southpaw feels that there might be a possibility that Smith and Warner are paying the fine for leading the revolt during last year’s infamous pay-hike issue.
“While cricket needs to be corruption-free but feel sanctions on Aussies bit harsh. Are @stevesmith49 & @davidwarner31 paying for revolt for pay hike? History has it administrators deride those who standup for players’ cause. Classic case: Ian Chappell #BallTampering #StevenSmith,” tweeted Gambhir.

Meanwhile, both Smith and Warner have been banned from this year’s Indian Premier League too. Smith was due to lead Rajasthan Royals while Warner was set to captain Sunrisers Hyderabad.
