India had lost the first Test against New Zealand and also it is their first defeat in the ICC World Test Championship 2019-21 after seven consecutive wins. At Basin Reserve, the Black Caps registered the victory by 10 wickets getting the lead of 1-0 in the two-match Test series. Former Indian cricketer and commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar revealed the reason for India’s Wellington defeat.
Manjrekar points out that Virat Kohli’s poor show in both the innings had led New Zealand to win the game. Kohli had scored two and 19 runs in first and second innings respectively.
“Kohli getting out early in both innings, that was a massive factor. If Virat Kohli gets runs, it puts the opposition off their plans. New Zealand stuck to their plans, nobody was out there counter-attacking and this did not help India’s cause,” Sanjay Manjrekar told on Star Sports after the match.
Virat Kohli’s poor run of form continues:
In the first innings, India had lost two wickets when Virat Kohli came to bat. The skipper had the responsibility to set up a partnership and to boost his team. But Kohli struggled to amid the condition of the sturdy winds in Wellington.
The debutant Kyle Jamieson bowled a wide bowl to the No.1 Test batsman while Kohli misread it only to hand a simple catch at silly point.
The Indian skipper was out after scoring just two runs.
While in India’s second innings, the batters again failed to deliver after conceding a massive 183-run lead to Kiwis in the first innings. Well, like the first essay, India’s top order got derailed. This time Indian skipper lost his wicket after scoring 19 runs.
After the match, while speaking to media, Virat expressed that nothing is wrong with his batting. Further added, its normal for a batsman when it comes to the poor run of form in three to four innings.
