Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar has reportedly requested the BCCI to rehire him as commentator for this year’s Indian Premier League. IPL 2020 is scheduled to start from September 19 in the UAE.

In March this year, the BCCI had sensationally sacked Sanjay Manjrekar from its commentary panel just ahead of the three-match ODI series against South Africa at home. The series, however, had to be called off due to the coronavirus outbreak. At that time, reports suggested that Sanjay Manjarekar would not commentate in the IPL too which was to start on March 29 but had to be suspended due to the pandemic.

Sanjay Manjrekar has made it clear to the BCCI that he is desperate to return to the commentary box. According to a report in The Times of India, the former cricketer-turned-commentator has already sent two e-mails to the Apex Council members of the BCCI in order to request them to take him back. In his second e-mail, he has assured the Board mandarins that he would “stick to the guidelines laid out” by the BCCI.

“Respected members of the Apex Council, hope you all keeping well. You are already in receipt of the email I sent to explain my position as commentator. With the IPL dates announced, bcci.tv will pick its commentary panel soon. I will be happy to work as per the guidelines laid by you. After all, we are working on what is essentially your production. Last time may be there was not enough clarity on this issue. Thanks very much, Regards,” reads his e-mail to the BCCI.

‘We should close this chapter now and forgive Manjrekar’:

Known for making bold statements, Sanjay Manjrekar was reportedly sacked by the Indian cricket board for his controversial “bits and pieces” comment on allrounder Ravindra Jadeja during the World Cup in England last year. He had also landed in controversy during the historic pink-ball Test in November for his on-air feud with fellow commentator Harsha Bhogle.

A BCCI official was quoted as saying by the news outlet that Sanjay Manjrekar should be forgiven. He also stated that the former cricketer has promised the BCCI officials he would adhere to the guidelines issued to the commentators.

“We should close this chapter now and forgive Manjrekar. He has already apologised for his comments on Jadeja and sorted it out with the player concerned. He has promised us that he’ll stick to the code of conduct for TV commentators. After all, he’s a fine commentator with massive cricketing knowledge,” the BCCI official told the news outlet.

The report further stated that the final call on this issue will rest with BCCI president and former India captain Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.
