Sanjay Manjrekar Respectfully Disagrees With Sunil Gavaskar’s Views On Virat Kohli, Selectors

A day after Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar questioned the national selectors and skipper Virat Kohli, Sanjay Manjrekar has come in their defence and has respectfully disagreed with Gavaskar’s views. In his tweet, Manjrekar wrote that India lost the semi-final narrowly, and also defended selectors.

Gavaskar, in his column for Mid-day, had questioned selectors and had also questioned Kohli retaining his job as the captain. As per him, a formal process should have been followed to re-appoint him as the captain of the side after World Cup. Gavaskar also called selectors lame ducks.

Kohli’s captaincy is under the scanner right from the day India lost the semi-final of World Cup 2019. There were reports that the board was also mulling to appoint Rohit Sharma as the captain in white-ball cricket but split captaincy idea has never worked in Indian cricket, this did not happen.

However, soon Rohit is expected to take over the charge when Virat will b rested during the home season. Rohit’s success as captain in white-ball cricket has impressed many but as said, the split captaincy idea not working in India will always act as a barrier.

Under Kohli, India have done well but the team hasn’t won an ICC trophy, despite making it to the second round of two championships. Kohli will again have a chance to win an ICC trophy with two back to back T20 World Cups coming in next two years.

Coming to selectors, the MSK Prasad-led selection committee has also been questioned on many occasions. Some called it a lightweight election committee but they have also done their job to the best.

Though before the World Cup, the committee was criticised for dropping Ambati Rayudu from the squad when he looked set to be part of the team for the tournament. The current bunch of selectors took over the job in 2016 and are expected to continue their job for few more years.
