Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has backed wicket-keeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmed to lead the side in all three formats of the game. In the wake to opt for someone with a fighting spirit, Afridi feels Sarfraz could fill the space and would be effective if handed over the responsibility.
Azhar Ali, who is reportedly on the brink of getting sacked after his side’s dismal show in ODI series in Australia, having lost it 4-1.
Speaking at an inauguration ceremony of Mass Communication Department at the Karachi University (KU), Afridi said Sarfraz is a fighter and Pakistan needs someone like to end their woes in limited-over cricket.
“Sarfraz is a fighter and Pakistan needs a fighter right now. He has the ability to captain Pakistan in all three formats.”
The 1992 world champions now face a tricky situation for themselves ahead of the upcoming 2019 World Cup in England. If the side fails to sustain the eighth spot or less than that in ODIs until September 2017, they won’t be directly qualifying for the mega event and will have to appear in World Cup qualifiers to cement their place.
Afridi, who announced his retirement from 50-overs cricket after the 2015 World Cup said he has,
‘I have played enough international cricket for Pakistan. I am focusing more on T20 leagues now.’
The veteran all-rounder turned his attention towards fitness during his speech and said it is one of the most promising prospects. He also cited legendary Imran Khan’s example saying even at the age of 64 he still keeps himself fit.
“Fitness is very important when you are playing cricket. Players should pay special attention to it. Look at [former Pakistan captain] Imran Khan. He still keeps himself fit.”
