Days after Sri Lanka Test captain Dinesh Chandimal sensationally claimed that his team’s success in the Test series against Pakistan was down to witchcraft, his Pakistan counterpart has rubbished the claims, insisting that his team suffered the shocking loss in the United Arabia Emirates because of poor performance.
Sri Lanka had arrived in UAE, a place where Pakistan had not lost a single series since shifting base in 2009, on the back of three consecutive defeats against India but went on to win both the games. In the first game, the Islanders defended a modest 135 before winning the second game by 68 runs to complete a clean sweep. And while Chandimal credited witchcraft for the historic series win, Sarfraz rued the poor performance from his team.
“We lost the two Tests because of our poor batting, and that is all. If they could win Test matches because of witchcraft or magic, then they should have also won the ODI and T20 series,” Sarfraz told the media.
“I believe in the holy Quran and also that there was magic in the world, but in the Test series we just batted badly and lost chances to win,” he added.
Chandimal, after arriving in Sri Lanka following the series defeat against Pakistan claimed he had received a special blessing from a meyni, or sorcerer, before flying to UAE for the series.
“I am always ready to accept the blessings of anyone – whether it is a meyni or any clergy,” Chandimal had told reporters after returning to Colombo.
“You can have talent, but without this blessing, you can’t move forward,” he had added.
Former Pakistan Test skipper Mohammad Yousuf also echoed Sarfraz’s sentiments, rubbishing Chandimal’s claims.
“Don’t mix cricket with such things. Pakistan’s planning was bad, and they messed it up,” said Yousuf.
The former batsman further said that if cricket matches could be won through witchcraft or with blessings of sorcerers, then Sri Lanka would have done well in all the formats. The Islanders got whitewashed in the ODIs and the T20Is.
