Pakistan T20 captain Sarfraz Ahmed, who has been tipped to replace Azhar Ali as the ODI skipper, has revealed that he chose to remain silent due to the fear of getting dropped from the team during former coach Waqar Younis’ tenure.
The wicketkeeper-batsman, who had led Pakistan U-19 to World Cup glory in 2006, also admitted to requesting the chief selector to not rest him for the tour of Zimbabwe.
“I was a bit insecure because I had been dropped from the last T20 matches before the Zimbabwe tour after performing and I was concerned if my replacement performed what would happen,” he said in an interview with Geo Super channel.
And when he was asked why was he scared of losing his spot in the team despite being the best wicketkeeper-batsman in the country, the 29-year-old could not give a satisfactory answer.
Later, he tried to play down the questions on World Cup 2015 incidents when he did not get a chance in the first four matches despite doing well prior to the tournament.
“I feel scared to say too much. It could lead to me being dropped. I fear being dropped from the team because I have seen what happened to some other players,” he said.
Sarfraz is currently in Pakistan and is missing the ongoing ODI series against Australia where his team is 3-1 down in the five-match series. He had to fly home before the start of the ODI series to be with his mother, who was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
