Scenarios: A four hors race for no.1 ranking in Test cricket explained!

With a humiliating loss against Sri Lanka in the first two Test matches, the Australian team is at high risk of losing out on the number. 1 spot in the ICC ranking by the end of the month. Another loss here will create more imbalances and will make them more prone to losing on that spot.

Now all the eyes are on the 3 Test matches which will kick off this week. The three test matches this week and the fourth Test match between India and West Indies that will be played next week will decide the fate of all the teams as who will finish on the top spot by the end of the month.

Sportzwiki brings you all the permutations and combinations in a simplified way which will help you to understand the entire scenario in a better way. This will surely clear the confusion in your mind. Here is how these teams can finish on top of the table at the end of the month –

Australia – Their fate will be decided not just by them but also by the result of the rest of two Test matches played in England and West Indies. If the Kangaroos are able to win the Colombo Test and England team fails to seal a win over Pakistan in the last Test that they have a fair chance to finish on top but there is an additional condition to it. If Indian team is able to win rest of the two test matches against West Indies then the Australian team will be dethroned from the top spot even if they win the last match.

England – A win or a draw in the final Test will give them the top spot in the ICC rankings given that the Australian team do not win the last Test against Sri Lanka. But if Indian team wins the series against West Indies by 3-0 then they will be relegated in the points table even if they win the Test match against Pakistan.

Pakistan – Surprisingly Pakistan team too have a chance to climb to number 1 spot. For them to be there they need a win in the last Test match along with it they have to hope for West Indies team to show some resistance and not letting the Indian team win by a margin of more than 2-0.

India – Indian team have a simple equation and the result of other teams will have no impact on them. The Indian team just have to claim the series by a margin of 3-0 to climb up to the number. 1 spot. If they are able to do so then it will be a big achievement for young captain Virat Kohli.
