It all started just few days before the start of the Champions Trophy with news of a rift between Head Coach Anil Kumble and Indian skipper Virat Kohli, and it ended just a day after the conclusion of ICC Champions Trophy, which summarises the series of events that have had happened during the ICC tournament.
Kumble stepping down from the post just a day after the loss against Pakistan has now opened up what was going inside the dressing room and with a ‘Thank You’ note later in the evening, sums it up all where he wrote that his partnership with the skipper was untenable. Kumble earlier showed interest to spend few more years Indian camp after he sent out a fresh application despite getting a direct entry in the procedure. His contract was extended by one series as well but Kumble made an early exit.
On one side, when Kumble has indirectly blamed Kohli for this saga, a report in Times Of India suggests that Anil Kumble scolded the Indian players after losing the final against Pakistan, which resulted in the quick exit of Kumble from the backroom staff. Kumble was upset with the performance of Indian bowlers in the game and had a talk with them.
Soon, reports of players losing confidence in him also came out but till then, Kumble had already bid adieu to what was keeping him bounded. There is also a glaring fact in this saga as Kumble, earlier in the day didn’t travel with team India to West Indies owing to ICC meeting in the city. Probably, he had already delivered his decision to BCCI and Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
Team India was more or less without a coach during whole Champions Trophy as the differences between Captain and Coach were observed, which left players in limbo on whom to follow. The smarter one chose the captain, unsurprisingly.
The Indian team will be without a Head Coach during the West Indies tour and Sri Lanka might be the first destination for the new incoming man, where India will play a full-fledged series.
