July 13, 2016, marks the 14th anniversary of one of India’s most famous wins on the foreign soil. No Indian cricket fan can forget the India-England’s NatWest ODI at Lord’s, where one of India’s most successful captains, Sourav Ganguly took off his shirt and waved it in the air after a thrilling win against the hosts.
Ganguly’s reaction was obviously a reply to English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff’s shirtless celebration in Mumbai during England’s tour of India in 2001.
England were trailing 3-1 in that One Day series, but a 2 run win in Delhi followed by a 5 run victory in Mumbai ensured that the series was leveled 3-3. A delighted Flintoff then removed his shirt and ran around in the stadium in excitement.
Coming to the historic match at Lord’s, England team posted a huge total of 325-5. In those days chasing anything above 300 was an uphill task let alone chasing it in English conditions. Chasing the huge target, India was in a spot of bother after losing 5 wickets with only 146 on the board. However, riding on Mohammad Kaif’s 87 and Yuvraj Singh’s 69, the Indian team went to seal an epic 2 wicket win. And what followed is one of the most iconic moments in Indian cricket history- Sourav Ganguly baring his torso and swinging his India jersey in the Lord’s balcony.
