Selectors announce Shreyas Iyer sans Mumbai squad

The Mumbai cricket association, on Saturday, announced their squad for their first Ranji Trophy game against Tamil Nadu to be played Chaudhary Bansi Lal Stadium at lahli. The selectors have given a maiden call to the Under 19 player Armaan Jaffer who performed quite well in the Under 19 world cup followed by a great 12 balls show in World T20 practise game against South Africa. Recently, he scored brave 69 runs in the three-day practise game against New Zealand at Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. Mumbai Coach praised Jaffer following his great batting effort, thus he has been called up to have the first bite of domestic cricket.

This is the first time that Jaffer has included in 15 members squad as earlier he has been in Mumbai Ranji trophy camp in the year 2013 when he was just a 14-year-old rookie but could not make to the 15 member squad.

The exclusion of the in-form batsman Shreyas Iyer comes as a surprise as it is an opportunity for Iyer to perform in Ranji trophy and get a ticket to the Indian team as still there is one vacant seat for the opening slot.  Reports suggest that he has been rested for the first game as there is a long domestic season ahead of him.

Aditya Tare has been handed over the charge to lead the defending champions. Seniors like Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Suryakumar Yadav and Shradul Thakur adds weight to the team.

Young guns Jay Bista and Akhil Herwadkar have also been selected; both will likely be opening the innings for Mumbai.

Mumbai will take on Tamil on October 6 and then will drive back to Delhi to take on Baroda from October 13 at Palam Ground in their second fixture

This year BCCI has introduced neutral venue concept in domestic cricket according to which a team will play all their eight fixtures on different venues with none of the match played at their home ground.

The Mumbai Squad is as follows –

Aditya Tare (capt, wk), Armaan Jaffer, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shradul Thakur, Suryakumar Yadav, Nikhil Patil, Kaustubh Pawar, Jay Bista, Akhil Herwadkar, Sufiyaan Shaikh, Balwinder Singh Sandhu (Jr.), Tushar Deshpande, Vishal Dhabolkar, Vijay Gohil.
