Shakib Al Hasan has been named captain of the Bangladesh ODI team for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and the World Cup 2023 tournament, Nazmul Hasan of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed on August 11, 2023.

The veteran all-rounder was amongst the three options shortlisted for the ODI captaincy along with Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz after Tamim Iqbal stepped down from the role owing to his fitness issues which saw him pull out from the Asia Cup tournament.

Shakib has led Bangladesh in ODI cricket in the past. He was the captain of the side in the 2011 ODI World Cup. Shakib is currently the Test and the T20I skipper as well. He was in Colombo recently, while Litton had returned to Bangladesh after playing the Global T20 Canada; and Mehidy was in Dhaka.

Have Appointed Shakib Al Hasan As The Captain For Asia Cup And World Cup: BCB

Amidst speculations, on Friday, August 11, 2023, Nazmul Hasan confirmed that Shakib Al Hasan would be leading the Bangladesh side in the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023 tournaments.

He further added that the Bangladesh national team selectors will announce the squad for the Asia Cup and the World Cup on August 12 and all 17 members will be selected for the two tournaments.

“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members,” Nazmul told reporters at his house on Friday.

It was learned that BCB members are in favor of Shakib Al Hasan as captain because he has the experience of leading the squad in big tournaments.
