Bangladesh’s Test and T20I skipper Shakib Al Hasan could face a ban of 18 months for not reporting fixing approach to the board. He received a fixing approach from a bookie two years ago.
As per a report in Bengali daily ‘Samakal, BCB is keeping Shakib away from practice sessions on ICC’s insistence. Shakib has just participated in one practice session so far. There is uncertainty over his participation in the India tour and if the report is to be believed, the reason behind him missing the series could turn out to be totally different.
Yesterday, the board had a meeting with the players and the coaches. Shakib was not a part of the meeting. At first, it looked like the reason behind his absence was the ongoing fallout between him and the board.
If banned, Shakib will be ruled out action for next one and a half year, which will also see him miss the next year’s T20 World Cup which is to be played in Australia.
It is to be noted that the BCB will again name T20I squad for the tour of India, today. It remains to be seen who will lead Bangladesh in the shortest format. In Tests, Mahmudullah will lead Bangladesh. He has led the team in the absence of Shakib on occasions.
While an update on Shakib is yet to come out, it has been confirmed that Bangladesh will miss out on the services of Tamil Iqbal and Mohammad Saifuddin. Tamim has pulled out from the tour due to personal reasons while Saifidin is suffering from a back issue.
Bangladesh kick off their tour of India on November 3. The Test series might see both the teams make their pink ball debut. BCCI, which sent a request to BCB last week, is waiting for approval from the visiting team. BCB has consulted players on the matter and is likely to announce the decision today.
