Former Australian spinner Shane Warne has backed Steven Smith and David Warner to take their team to World Cup glory. Australia has returned back to form as they had won the five-match bilateral series against India by 3-2. Thus, Australia is going to be a confident side when Smith and Warner will get back into the squad.
Meanwhile, Steven Smith and David Warner will need to prove their mettle before they can make their return to the Australian side. Smith and Warner are quality players and Warne believes they would be an automatic selection in the World Cup. Consequently, the upcoming Indian Premier League is going to play a key role for Smith and Warner to cement their place in the side.
It would be prudent to consider Australia as a firm contender.
Smith will play for the Rajasthan Royals whereas David Warner will join back Sunrisers Hyderabad. Consequently, both of them will like to hit the ground running in the T20 league. The IPL will begin from 23rd March with reigning champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“I think Smith and Warner will be accepted with open arms. They have done their time. They are not bad people, they just made a bad mistake,” Warne, who claimed 708 wickets for Australia in 145 Tests, said.
“When you have got that sort of class as a cricketer, they will go straight back into the World Cup squad.”
Australia is a champion side as they have won the World Cup title on five occasions. Thus, it would be a mistake to write them off as they have the skills and the players to go all the way in the ODI showpiece. Furthermore, the recent series triumph against India will add a shot in the arm.
“They just beat India in the T20 series and to chase 360 in India without Smith and Warner is an ominous sign for the rest of the World Cup competition.”
Steven Smith and David Warner are world-class players. Hence, their return to the Australian team will be a big boost for the side. Australia will begin their World Cup defence against Afghanistan.
