Shane Warne, Kevin Pietersen Under Police Investigation For Not Wearing Seat Belt 1

Former cricketers Shane Warne, Michael Slater and Kevin Pietersen are in hot water with the Tasmania Police after a video clip showed the trio not wearing seatbelts in a moving car during a visit to Hobart.

The video was posted on November 14 by Warne on his facebook page when the trio were in Hobart for the second Test between Australia and South Africa. They were accompanied by former Aussie captain Mark Taylor, who was driving the car and former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy, both of whom were wearing seatbelts.

Warne and Slater realised their mistake soon after and wore the seat belts immediately but that’s probably not going to stop the Police from taking actions.

“There is an investigation undergoing … we have a copy of the footage and have our officers looking and reviewing that tape,” acting Inspector Ian Mathewson told reporters on Thursday.

“The men haven’t been contacted but I believe they will be at some stage,” he added.

As per the rules, failure to wear seatbelts carries a fine of $300 and three demerit points for the driver while the passengers could also pay a hefty fine for the offence.

Criticising the players for their careless attitude, Mathewson said: “The real penalty here is death or serious injury. It is disappointing for any person or any vehicle occupant not to be wearing a seatbelt and I suppose it is even worse for the fact they are high-profile individuals.”

Although Taylor was wearing the belt, he also faces the danger of being prosecuted. Speaking on that, the Police official said:”There is a separate offence within our legislation for the driver of a motor vehicle permitting the vehicle occupants to not wear their seatbelts.”

When asked about the time duration the Police can take for the case, he said:“It depends on how easy it will be to contact the individuals, so I can’t really put a time frame on it.”
