Former Australia spinner Shane Warne has revealed his prediction about who can win the much-awaited ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales. Hosts England will take on South Africa in the opener on May 30, 2019, at The Oval in London. The tournament will last for 45 days with 48 matches to be played. India will start their campaign against the Proteas on June 5. The format for the 2019 edition will see 10 best teams in the world going head-to-head in a round-robin format. The tournament will culminate with the fifth final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 14.
With each passing day, the excitement for the event is increasing as the cricketing world is busy predicting who can all the way in the tournament. Well, Shane Warne has tipped England and India as “hot favourites” to win the ICC World Cup 2019. Warne’s comments echo the popular perception in the lead up to the showpiece event. Both India and England have dominated ODIs like no other team in the last two years or so. While England are ranked number one, India are breathing down their neck at two.
Since the start of 2018, India have won series in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand at home against Windies in addition to winning the Asia Cup. India’s only defeat since 2018 came in England when they lost the closely-fought series 2-1.
Warne, meanwhile, took to Twitter to reveal his predictions. The legendary spinner also believes that Australia could defend their title in England given the selectors make the right decision. Australian cricket has been going through a turmoil in recent times and the five-time world champions have not won a series since the start of 2017.
“As I’m putting my #worldcup squad together for my column, I really believe Aust can win it again. As we have the players for the conditions, match winners etc. I think England & India go in as hot favourites, but if the selectors play their part – then the Aussies can 100% win,” Shane Warne wrote on Twitter.
