The former Australian great, Shane Warne, has offered to become the coach of Australian cricket team during the three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka in the month of February next year. This is the time when Australian team will be in the sub-continent to play the Test series against India and probably a young squad will be fielded to take on Sri Lankan in that series.
Darren Lehmann, the head coach will be away with the Test team, hence the T20 boys will be without any coach, opening a door for a senior to lead the team. Shane Warne has earlier served as coaching consultant of Australian cricket team when they toured South Africa before the T20 World Cup 2014 played in Bangladesh. Apart from that, he has also led the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals. He was the coach cum player and captain of now the defunct franchise. Rajasthan Royals won the first edition of Indan Premier league for which Warne was eulogized as a rockstar.
“We are speaking to a number of people about the prospect of coaching the T20 International squad against Sri Lanka as our team head coach and assistant coach, Darren Lehmann and David Saker respectively, will be in India,
“At this stage, no decision has been made on an appointment” ” said a CA spokesperson.
Warne, 47, has a rich experience of playing 73 T20s. However, he hasn’t played this format at international level but has played big T20 Leagues including Indian Premier League and Big Bash league. With a total of 708 wickets in the longest format of the game, the former leggie is also the second highest wicket-taker in Test format after Muttiah Muralitharan touched the magical figure of 800 in his last Test match.
