Shardul Thakur Reveals Why He Donned Sachin Tendulkar’s Number 10 Jersey
Debutant Shardul Thakur was the subject of some unwanted criticism after he came out on the field wearing the iconic jersey number 10 during the fourth One-Day International against Sri Lanka on Thursday (August 31). The Mumbai star managed to make an impact in his first One-Day International dismissing Niroshan Dickwella for just 14. He finished the match with figures of 26 for 1 in 7 overs, but that did not stop the fans from slamming his decision to wear the iconic jersey that Sachin Tendulkar wore once upon a time.

Since Tendulkar’s retirement, the fans have urged the BCCI not to give the famous jersey to any other player let alone a debutant, and as expected, the fans lost their cool when Thakur wore the jersey.
And with everyone keen to know the reason behind Shardul’s jersey number, the bowler himself came out and revealed the reason after the match ended. Interacting with the media, Shardul said that he chose the number 10 jersey because the total of his birth date is 10. The 25-year old was born on 16th October 1991, and if one adds those three digits (16+10+1991), the total will be 10. Interestingly, the initials of Shardul’s name ‘ST’ are same as of Sachin Tendulkar’s.
Meanwhile, India thrashed Sri Lanka by 168 runs in the fourth ODI to go 4-0 in the five-match series. Batting first, India rode on blistering centuries from Rohit Sharma (104) and Virat Kohli (131) to post a mammoth 375 for 5 in the allotted 50 overs. In reply, the hosts failed to deliver with the bat once again and were all out for a paltry 207 to suffer their heaviest defeat at home.
Speaking after the match, Sri Lanka’s stand-in captain Lasith Malinga had lavished praise on India’s centurions and rued the poor bowling performance of his team.
“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played well. We didn’t consistently bowl a good line and length. I think on this kind of wicket our length is very crucial and we have to concentrate more on that. The first 30-40 runs Virat got very quickly,” Malinga said at the presentation ceremony.
