Shastri, Sehwag, Moody Front Runners For India Head Coach Job

Ravi Shastri, Tom Moody and Virender Sehwag have emerged as the front-runner to succeed Anil Kumble as the Head Coach of Indian cricket team. The news was confirmed by a BCCI official, who indicated that the board will put a final stamp on the name of any one of these three,

“The new coach is likely to be any of these three – Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag and Tom Moody,” Official said.

The name of Shastri and Sehwag is already favourite, as Shastri shares a good rapport with Indian skipper Virat Kohli, whereas, Sehwag was asked to apply for the post by Kohli. So these are already favourites for the job but Tom Moody is surely a surprising name in the list. He will only be given the job if Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) bypass the viewpoint of Virat Kohli and look for someone not favourite to the captain. Sehwag and Moody had already applied for the job at first when BCCI invited applications for the post of Head Coach on May 25. At that time, Shastri did not send an application due to the presence of current coach but after Kumble’s exit, Shastri was quick to send an application for the job and he has already revealed that he applied for it a long ago.

Talking to the coaches, Virender Sehwag has no experience of coaching an international team, whereas, he has worked as a professional with Haryana team in 2015/16. He was the Head of Cricket Operations and strategy for IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab and mentor of the side in IPL 2017.

Shastri has had two stints with the Indian team. He was first appointed as the team manager of Indian team after finalists of 2003 World Cup had a disastrous exit from 2007 World Cup. He made a comeback in the Indian backroom staff in 2014 as Director of the side, during which he led India to semi-finals of Wolrd Cup 2015 and T20 World Cup 2016, respectively.

Later, he was quite confident of getting the job of Head Coach of the side in 206 but lost the race to Anil Kumble.

Tom Moody

Tom Moody, who coached Sunrisers Hyderabad to IPL victory in 2016 has worked with Sri Lanka in past. Lankan team qualified for the finals of 2007 World Cup before losing to Australia.

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of BCCI will interview the applicants on July 10 a day after the deadline to apply for the coach ends.
